Transitional Living Rooms

Styled by Silk Home

Transitional living rooms are the perfect combination between traditional and modern living spaces. While these living rooms encompass the key elements of the traditional living room, making the space seem as homely as possible, transitional living rooms are more open plan, bring and contemporary.

With large windows, multiple light textures and sometimes even large glass doors leading to an outside deck, a key feature of transitional living rooms is their ability to use light to their advantage, making the space seem bright, open and warm. The use of light in transitional living spaces can really transform the space from a general living room into a transitional living space.

Transitional living rooms are much like open plan living spaces as there is typically no clear dividing point between the kitchen, dining room and lounge room. While it may be assumed that this makes a space feel cluttered, unorganised and small it actually makes the area feel much bigger as there is typically more space than what is in a traditional living area. This works to the advantage of transitional living rooms as it allows for a wide variety of textures, colours and furniture to be used in the designing of the area. Bigger feature items such as lamps and coffee tables can be used as core elements that stand alone rather than being cramped into the space.

Mats are also commonly used in transitional living spaces. This allows for another element of texture and visual interest to the room and it does not take up any room! Mats come in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes. Some are used to add some more colour to the room and others can act as key feature pieces in the room. When used effectively, mats can open up a room and tie a wide variety of the key elements together.
